The difference between Biodegradable and Compostable

Recycle_symbol

Now-a-days…we live in, what I call, “The Green Age.” More and more people are jumping on the “green” wagon and are trying to do what they can to reduce their carbon footprint. These new green-newbie’s are transitioning and unless you’re a “green-a-holic”, you may not be familiar with a lot of the “green”-words. Here at Swipes Lovin Wipes, we stand by our claims, two terms of which cause a little confusion at times! So today we’re going to break down the difference between—Biodegradable and Compostable.

Biodegradable

Let’s start off with a pretty common word…Biodegradable. Some of us learned that word in High School…well at least that’s the first time I remember hearing it. My definition of “biodegradable” was anything that is natural enough to easily degrade and become one with the earth again (without causing any issues). I’m sure I’m close but let’s look at the actual definition. According to dictionary.com, Biodegradable means:

Capable of being decomposed by biological agents, especially bacteria.

Many items are biodegradable but that doesn’t make it good for the environment. Biodegradation can happen over a period of days or hundreds of years—and that makes the difference between what is “good” or “bad” for the environment.  The more natural the item is the faster it will biodegrade. Essentially biodegradable products should break down into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass in a reasonable amount of time. For example an apple core will never biodegrade in a landfill but take 2 weeks in a backyard compost, a matter of days in a industrial composter, and 8 weeks in a ocean. Regular plastic cups will never biodegrade in a landfill, there’s an unknown amount of time on how long it would take in backyard compost or in an industrial composter. But we do know, plastic is very hard to breakdown, so much so, that once it’s in the ocean it goes through photodegradation (breaking down plastic into smaller pieces) and turns into a trash island for about 450 years! Now that’s a big difference!

 Compostable

Compostable products are just like biodegradable products but better! When broken down, rich nutrients are released into the soil called humus, making Compostable products some of the best for the environment. The usual breakdown time for a compostable product is one to four months. These products should be able to become usable compost in a timely manner through an appropriate composting program or facility, or in a home compost pile or device. This compost can then be used for gardening and planting! No harsh chemicals or pesticides to worry about!

We're bringing "Sexy Back"....to our Blogs!

Sex

Sorry for the cliche but here at the Swipes Lovin Wipes Blog, our goal is to provide you both Sexy and Green tips...and I think we've been giving more green than sexy...so let's talk about Sex shall we? Well here, we prefer to call it "Lovin"!

What do you call it?

Keepin' it Sexy and Green for the 4th of July!

Flag-fireworks2

It's 4th of July ( Can you believe it? The time is flying this year!) weekend which means there is a lot of traveling, pic-nicing, BBQ-ing and just plain ol' gathering. But remember you're impact on the environment this weekend. Keep it Sexy and Green---maybe stay indoor's with the lights off all weekend...you'll save energy and create your own fireworks! Just remember your Swipes Lovin Wipes!

But if staying inside with the lights off isn't an option, prepare your weekend the greenest way possible. A few weeks ago we gave you tips to a greener summer, check that out and get great BBQing and outdoor suggestions!

Fireworks aren't exactly the most environmentally friendly activity, so chose smart. If you're choosing to set off your own fireworks this year chose ones that are rich in nitrogen, they're a little more expensive but emit less smoke into the air. But an even better idea is to go see a local firework show! They're bigger, better, safer and made for many to share in the the 4th of July tradition!

Whatever you do this weekend stay safe and remember to use your Swipes!

Happy 4th!

Summertime and "Green" living is easy!

Summertime1

It's summertime folks, longer days, backyard BBQ's, swimming pools, and of course warmer weather! So what can we do this summer to stay Sexy,Green, and Cool (literally and figuratively)? Well for starters you want to put on those green sunglasses and do your part to save the earth and even your wallet!

Here are a few easy tips that will keep you cool and calm:

  • Don't touch the thermostat! 78 to 76 will keep your place nice and cool! Or you can use a fan. And if it's still too warm just wear less clothes! ;-)
  • Find local activities to keep you entertained! By going local, you can walk, bike, or take public transportation. It will reduce your carbon footprint, keep you in shape, and save you some green! Gas is ridiculous!
  • Summer threads: Choose Organic Cotton, hemp, and bamboo..they are light fabrics that will keep your temperature low! But even better than buying new clothes would be to buy reused clothes at your local thrift stores or even Plato's Closet! There is no better way being sustainable that reusing what's already here! Plus you won't pay those retail prices!!!
  • BBQing? Well think about how chemically toxic that could be...if you're using a charcoal grill think natural charcoal and wood briquettes like Cowboy Charcoal or Green Hearts Natural Charcoal. Also when it's time to clean the grill use natural cleaning products such as SoyClean organic grill cleaner. We're working on a chemical-free summer!
  • Use Compostable or bioplastic plates, cups, and utensils! Trellis Earth has a wide selection of bioplastics derived from renewable raw resources making their products 100% biodegradable. Even better..they can be used more than once and they're microwavable!
  • Buy produce and meat from local farmers markets, this helps your local economy flourish and cuts down on the amount of fossil fuels it takes to do large supermarket deliveries. Not to harp on this too many times..but you'll save money! Are you noticing a trend???
  • And one thing about summer that can never be avoided are the BUGS! Mosquitoes eat you alive (I have 10 bites to prove it!)..so what can we do as savvy eco consumers, think of a natural way to repel these bugs without harming ourself with DEET (which is in OFF!). Find mosquitoe repellent plants like lemon balm, basil, citronella, and marigolds. Also invest in a natural DEET-free repellent like All Terrain Insect Repellent.
  • Drink plenty of fluids this summer! But don't use plastic bottles(come on we are so passed that phase!)...use your reusable bottles. You take them everywhere and use them over and over and over again!
  • Last but never least...always remember to use your Swipes Lovin Wipes! They will keep cool and fresh in life's hottest situations ;-)

Of course there are plenty of more tips to help you "Go Green" this summer. Follow us and we'll help you make a Sexy and Green transition!

Until next time...Peace, Lovin, Swipes!
