Summertime and "Green" living is easy!
It's summertime folks, longer days, backyard BBQ's, swimming pools, and of course warmer weather! So what can we do this summer to stay Sexy,Green,and Cool (literally and figuratively)? Well for starters you want to put on those green sunglasses and do your part to save the earth and even your wallet!
Here are a few easy tips that will keep you cool and calm:
- Don't touch the thermostat! 78 to 76 will keep your place nice and cool! Or you can use a fan. And if it's still too warm just wear less clothes! ;-)
- Find local activities to keep you entertained! By going local, you can walk, bike, or take public transportation. It will reduce your carbon footprint, keep you in shape, and save you some green! Gas is ridiculous!
- Summer threads: Choose Organic Cotton, hemp, and bamboo..they are light fabrics that will keep your temperature low! But even better than buying new clothes would be to buy reused clothes at your local thrift stores or even Plato's Closet! There is no better way being sustainable that reusing what's already here! Plus you won't pay those retail prices!!!
- BBQing? Well think about how chemically toxic that could be...if you're using a charcoal grill think natural charcoal and wood briquettes like Cowboy Charcoal or Green Hearts Natural Charcoal. Also when it's time to clean the grill use natural cleaning products such as SoyClean organic grill cleaner. We're working on a chemical-free summer!
- Use Compostable or bioplastic plates, cups, and utensils! Trellis Earth has a wide selection of bioplastics derived from renewable raw resources making their products 100% biodegradable. Even better..they can be used more than once and they're microwavable!
- Buy produce and meat from local farmers markets, this helps your local economy flourish and cuts down on the amount of fossil fuels it takes to do large supermarket deliveries. Not to harp on this too many times..but you'll save money! Are you noticing a trend???
- And one thing about summer that can never be avoided are the BUGS! Mosquitoes eat you alive (I have 10 bites to prove it!)..so what can we do as savvy eco consumers, think of a natural way to repel these bugs without harming ourself with DEET (which is in OFF!). Find mosquitoe repellent plants like lemon balm, basil, citronella, and marigolds. Also invest in a natural DEET-free repellent like All Terrain Insect Repellent.
- Drink plenty of fluids this summer! But don't use plastic bottles(come on we are so passed that phase!)...use your reusable bottles. You take them everywhere and use them over and over and over again!
- Last but never least...always remember to use your Swipes Lovin Wipes! They will keep cool and fresh in life's hottest situations ;-)

Shop Your Closet: Holiday Edition!
The holidays are a time for parties and get-togethers, and those usually involve dressing up. The husband and I usually have a holiday shin-dig at our place, and I'm always happy when awesome people like my buddy Jamie can make it. While all of the ladies at the party were quite well dressed, I chose Jamie to guest-star on Shop Your Closet because it's a great way to illustrate how important personal style is.
Jamie and I go way back– to about 7th grade, and it's safe to say that even then we had very different personal styles. Over the years, as I wore everything from baggy jeans and boy's flannels to red pleather pants and corset tops, and from peace sign necklaces to spiked cuff bracelets, Jamie's style tended to stay a little more grounded.
Nowadays, when home working I'm always in a tee shirt and jeans, but I still have a more flashy style when it comes to special occasions. And while Jamie can certainly rock a cute dress, she's most comfortable in, well, comfortable clothes. Comfortable, of course, definitely doesn't have to mean boring or less stylish, which brings me to Jamie's look at the holiday party: a pair of dark skinny jeans paired with a cozy but flattering red & blue plaid flannel, and to top it all off– a great pair of tall brown riding boots. Plus, the outfit looked great with Jamie's new shorter haircut.
I usually like to buy a whole new outfit to wear for the party; however, that was not a financially sound idea this year. I went through my closet and realized I had a super-cute green silk tiered ruffle top that I got back in the summer on a super-sale from Victoria's Secret, and that it would be perfect for the holiday party. I had only worn it a few times, and I planned on dressing it up even more for the holiday party. I paired it with black linen shorts, new lace "leggings" (there's that shorts in winter look again!) and of course, my favorite shoes: my grey Jeffrey Campbell booties. So I only bought one new piece of clothing for the party, and it's a very versatile piece.
So the lesson for today is: whether your style is extravagant or classic, make sure you're comfortable in your clothes, and you'll look great! (Unless you're a man wearing "jeggings". Even if it feels good, don't do it.)

The silk dupioni is excellent for more hand-stitching, embroidery, beading, or any embellishments you may apply, like blinging it out with Swarzovski crystals for your burlesque costume. The silk is durable enough for home steam, steam ironing, and spot stain removal.
I have been making corsets for 10 years. All of my corsets are made with real corset materials and hardware: All steel boning, a busc at center front, cotton coutil as the interior fabric and proper 2- piece grommets up the back for lacing.
The front is 14 inches long, so it ends in a devilish point in the front, yet it's cut higher over the hips so it blends smoothly with your skirts. This Overbust corset does wonders for your waist and you can treat it as a true foundation garment.
