CNN Poll: 52% of Americans dislike debt deal, 77% think Obama and Congress acted like ‘spoiled children’

A majority of Americans disapprove of the deal struck Sunday by President Barack Obama and congressional leaders that will raise the country's legal borrowing limit, and three out of four believe elected officials have acted like "spoiled children."

According to a CNN/ORC International poll conducted Monday during a House of Representatives vote on the legislation, 52 percent of Americans say they are opposed to the debt ceiling deal...

...even Obama loyalists on Capitol Hill privately say he didn't exactly burnish his leadership credentials in this process. "At the end of the day, voters expect their President to bring people together," one of them said. "He hasn't been able to on this."
It was a sure gone conclusion because fact is he didn't even try. No leadership whatsoever. And even liberals in the liberal media can't hide the fact anymore: Chuch Todd: -Let the President Run Against Himself- in PA

Change! Obama Approval Drops to New Low of 40%, Disapproval at 50%

President Obama's job approval rating is at a new low, averaging 40% in July 26-28 Gallup Daily tracking. His prior low rating of 41% occurred several times, the last of which was in April. As recently as June 7, Obama had 50% job approval.

Gallup: Lack of spending cuts biggest worry (55%) for Americans in debt ceiling debate

As usual, the same old song and dance out of Washington: increase taxes for promises of spending cuts later. The tax increase occurs right away. The spending cuts never materialize. The jig on that is up by this point in time. Via Ed Morrissey:
And it’s not even close, according to Gallup’s latest survey.  While their analysis focuses on the support for compromise in the debate, the question of what gets compromised matters quite a bit to Americans — in fact, more than avoiding a default:
Americans continue to express a strong desire that any agreement that is reached include plans for major cuts in future spending. Americans now by a 20-point margin — 55% vs. 35% — say they worry more that the government would raise the debt ceiling without plans for major spending cuts, than that the government would not raise the ceiling and an economic crisis would ensue.

Americans appear to be saying to their elected representatives: Get an agreement done, even if it is not an ideal plan, but make sure it includes major spending cuts.
This is exactly why we need a balanced budget amendment to the US Constitution - politicians can no more help themselves than an alcoholic with a credit card in a bar. Or a kid in a candy store. The headlines all over the media out there ought to be along the lines of "YOU LIE!" Obama claimed that 80% of Americans are sold on his tax increase to fund government waste:
The polls show almost the exact opposite, with only 11% supported an only or mostly tax increase to solve the budget problem. But according to Gallup:
  • Only/Mostly with spending cuts: 50%
  • Only/Mostly with tax increases: 11%
The AP had this to say about it:
...claiming support from 8 in 10 people was a reach.
Yeah - to put it mildly. And via Instapundit:

He continues to make up his own facts because the media continues to let him get away with it. From a separate Insty thread:

The headlines all over the media out there ought to be along the lines of "YOU LIE!" Obama claims that 80% of Americans are sold on his tax increase to fund government waste. The polls show almost the exact opposite, with only 11% supported an only or mostly tax increase to solve the budget problem. President Obama on Friday kept up the pressure on Republicans to agree to revenue increases in a deal to raise the debt ceiling, claiming 80 percent of the public supports Democrats' demand for tax increases.

"The American people are sold," Obama said. "The problem is members of Congress are dug in ideologically."

Throughout the press conference, Obama blasted Republicans for ignoring what he said is the will of the American people by rejecting tax increases that would balance out spending cuts in a debt package.

Now for the reality:

Frankly, it appears that the problem is that members of the West Wing can’t do math. The latest national survey on the topic came from Gallup, which expressed some support for the “balanced” approach, but hardly showed 80% of Americans backing tax hikes — excuse me, “revenue increases.”
Americans’ preferences for deficit reduction clearly favor spending cuts to tax increases, but most Americans favor a mix of the two approaches. Twenty percent favor an approach that relies only on spending cuts and 4% favor an approach that uses tax increases alone.
That puts 76%, not 80%, somewhere in between the two points.  But Gallup breaks this out more effectively:
  • Only/Mostly with spending cuts: 50%
  • Only/Mostly with tax increases: 11%
Only 32% prefer a balance between spending cuts and tax increases, which added to the bottom option would still tilt the public far more in favor of spending cuts, 50/43.  Among independents — the most non-ideological group possible in this survey — it’s 51/41, a wider split. This is hardly a public that is “sold, sold!” on tax hikes.

Reminder: 73% of Americans, 57% of Democrats Blame Wasteful Government Spending for Deficit

From back in April of this year: Poll: Americans Blame Wasteful Government Spending for Deficit.  From Gallup: Americans Blame Wasteful Government Spending for Deficit. And it's quite bipartisan:
Not too few taxes, not tax breaks for the rich, not evil Republicans, and not Bush. Wasteful. Government. Spending. And indeed it is. Ironically, Obama has been spending our money destroying the US economy, not helping get it out of recession.

Perhaps the GOP can grow a spine and put this into their talking points like every single day. Also they ought emphasize that Obama voted against raising the debt ceiling in 2006 calling it a failure of leadership. It should be the beginning of every statement that they make.

On this Independence Day, remember that Congress governs with only 8% approval

Voters are evenly divided this month when asked if most members of Congress are corrupt:  39% say yes; 38% say no, while 23% are undecided. The view that most congressmen are corrupt has ranged from 36% to 45% since January of last year.
We The People are supposed to represented in a limited government working under our consent. That is no longer the case. We are ow being ruled over by political elitists - without our consent. The ruling class is passing bills that are not debated or even read. Provisions are secretly inserted that have nothing to do with the bills themselves. The bills are signed into law even though they are patently unconstitutional. In addition, laws are being passed so vague that unelected bureaucrats in federal agencies like the EPA have unprecedented power over us sans any accountability. It is a feature, not a bug! As Thomas Sowell enumerates very well, We The People, and the US Constitution, are an obstacle to liberalism and are treated as such by the executive branch, the Congress, and by activist judges that are the envy of the best pretzel makers to ever walk the earth. It is an utter corruption of what used to American values. There is no provision in the US Constitution that one person gets to live off of another, yet that is the value of the ruling class today. It is enumerated quite well in this video that I have posted many times:
We no longer live under the rule of law, but under the whims of liberal feelings.
