"I want my MTV"- MTV turns 30 today!!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY MTV!!!

Oh my oh my look how we have grown.  The network MTV originally dubbed Music Television turns 30 today!  30 years ago today, on Aug. 1, 1981, a new cable network called MTV kicked off its broadcasting life.  After its debut, MTV became a pop culture sensation, impacting and uniting TV and the music industry. Debut video jockey Mark Goodman told viewers that “you’ll never look at music the same way again.”

1st 'veejays': J.J. Jackson, Mark Goodman, Nina Blackwood, Alan Hunter, and Martha Quinn

The first video ever broadcast on the network was The Buggles’ "Video Killed the Radio Star." (How appropriate was that?) The network’s launch helped define the colorful ‘80s, at times provoking controversy, but most importantly producing pop superstars such as Madonna, Michael Jackson and Prince. It quickly became the voice of youth culture.

Though MTV changed the landscape of music by introducing us to the art form of the music video, it wasn't until 1983, that one artist broke the color barrier and redefined the music video itself...

During MTV's first few years on the air, very few black artists were included in rotation on the channel. Those who were in MTV's rotation included Eddy Grant, Tina Turner and Donna Summer.  MTV rejected other black artists' videos, such as Rick James' "Super Freak", because they didn't fit the channel's rock dominated format at the time. The exclusion enraged James; he publicly advocated the addition of more black artists' videos on the channel. Rock legend David Bowie also questioned MTV's lack of black artists during an on-air interview with VJ Mark Goodman in 1983. MTV's original head of talent and acquisition, Carolyn B. Baker, who was black, had questioned why the definition of music had to be so narrow, as had a few others.

Before 1983, Michael Jackson also struggled to receive airtime on MTV. To resolve the struggle and finally "break the color barrier," the president of CBS Records at the time, Walter Yetnikoff, denounced MTV in a strong, profane statement, threatening to take away MTV's ability to play any of the record label's music videos. However, Les Garland, then acquisitions head, said he decided to air Jackson's "Billie Jean" video without pressure from CBS.This was contradicted by CBS head of Business Affairs David Benjamin in Vanity Fair. In any case, MTV began showing the "Billie Jean" video in regular rotation in 1983, forming a lengthy partnership with Jackson and helping other black music artists.

According to 'The Austin Chronicle', Jackson's video for the song "Billie Jean" was "the video that broke the color barrier, even though the channel itself was responsible for erecting that barrier in the first place." After airing Jackson's music videos, Jackson became even more popular. This move helped other black artists such as Prince, Whitney Houston, and Jackson's younger sister, Janet Jackson break into heavy rotation on the channel. Jonathan Cohen of Billboard magazine commented Janet Jackson's "accessible sound and spectacularly choreographed videos were irresistible to MTV, and helped the channel evolve from rock programming to a broader, beat-driven musical mix."

Today, MTV has changed, but whether they are playing a block of music videos or if they are running a marathon of 'Jersey Shore', the network proves to be a vital and influential piece of the music expansive and ever-changing music tapestry for the past 3 decades and they don't appear to be slowing down.  Happy birthday MTV!

Lil' Wayne says 'Tha Carter IV' is done! Then what's the hold up?

During an interview with MTV News last week, Lil Wayne confirmed that the recording of the highly anticipated fourth installment of his Tha Carter series is finished and will drop at the end of August, a day after the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards air live on August 28.
'XXL Mag also adds that Lil' Wayne tapped Nas, Shyne and Jadakiss for an all-star posse cut that will close out the LP.

Contributing writer Shaheem Reid, who interviewed Weezy for XXL’s July/August 2011 cover story, had a chance to preview the disc and got a rundown of all of the set’s guest stars. As expected, Wayne has songs with his Young Money crew, along with Busta Rhymes, Bun B, Tech N9ne, Cee Lo, John Legend and will.i.am. Swizz Beatz, Bangladesh, Polow Da Don and Boi-1da all provided beats.

What can we expect from the Young Money lieutenant?
Judging by the latest Carter IV single, the album will offer even more diversity. According to Wayne, the acoustic-flavored, sing-songy "How to Love" was actually inspired by Tupac Shakur.

"That song is just sweeping the world. It's touching every woman, that's what it was for," Wayne said. "It was like Tupac had 'Keep Ya Head Up' and it was a message to women and little girls across the world just to keep your head up even though things are hard. That's what my song was."

Remembering Ryan Dunn...

Earlier this week, Ryan Dunn's family, friends and loved ones gathered at a memorial held at Paramount Pictures in Los Angeles to mourn the "Jackass" star's death. During the service, a very moving video tribute was played to honor Dunn, the second half of which was cut together by "Jackass" co-star Rick Kosick, and includes a song for Dunn by Roger Alan Wade, "The Light Outlives the Star."

'How'd they do that?' 'Transformers' stars discuss shooting the 'building-escape' scene!

'

For those who've seen "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," there is so much going on in the film that one could spend the next 12 months breaking down all the details. The building-escape scene is one of the more impressive 'tricks' in the film-- we turn our attention to one of the film's most impressive action sequences: the part when evil Decepticon Shockwave sends his massive, spinning, snakelike destroyer after our protagonists, who become trapped in the upper stories of a tall building. 'Shockwave' proceeds to cut the building in half, leaving our heroes no option but to jump out of the windows and slide down the outside of the building to safety.

MTV News had the scene's stars, Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Tyrese Gibson, explain how they managed to pull off that sequence.

'Super Bass' rapper, Nicki Minaj is 'Principal for a Day'!

Nicki Minaj 'loves the kids!' Earlier this week, Nicki Minaj surprised a group of high school students at Chicago's Collin's Academy this past Wednesday.
The students who won the 'Get MotivatED Challenge' – a six week competition to improve daily attendance rates nationwide were rewarded for their academic achievement and for the 7% increase in attendance. Nicki also led an English class and had lunch with the pupils. She commented:

“I am a young, female mogul before I am an artist. As a business woman there isn’t a single day where I don’t use my education or acquire new knowledge to ensure my success. Regardless of where you are today, with education you can take yourself where you want to be. That’s why I am working with the Get Schooled Foundation. They are finding innovative and exciting ways to bring that message to schools like the Collins Academy.”

Nicki stopped by the school to answer questions from a few chosen class seniors and freshmen in the school gymnasium as well as address the entire school body during an assembly hosted by MTV News’ very own Sway. Nicki, a graduate of New York’s LaGuardia High School herself, spoke to the students and faculty members about the importance of her education in her career.

“It was total pandemonium when she came out. They all stood up. I had to have them to sit down and tell them it ain’t a concert,” Sway told us laughing. “If your parent tries to tell you what’s best for you, you tend to not listen. But if that hero and person that they look up to like a Nicki Minaj—if she comes on stage and says, ‘You know what, you like the life I live? You like the things I’ve accomplished?’ Well this is how I did it, through education.’ Then you see that moment of clarity when everything clicks.”

Three Collins’ students who showed tremendous leadership during the six week period were awarded with $10,000 scholarships thanks to Get Schooled and Comcast. The College Board also donated a new counseling library to the school and provided one-year of free access to SAT prep on-line for every junior and senior in the class.
