Spanakopitza from Papa Cristos and caramel Oreo ice cream at Scoops

Yesterday I had lunch with Zach from Midtown Lunch LA (founder and former blogger of Midtown Lunch). He asked if I was up for trying Greek food, I said yes, and off we went to Papa Cristos, where I tried this delicious spanakopitza:

I'm a big spinach fan, and feta fan, so the combination all warmed up on bread with caramelized onions was delicious. I also had a big salad, and tasted Zach's gyro meat. I felt a little badly because I was mocking the signs on the homemade baklava, which looked delicious, but said "homemade" "chocolate" and "raspberry" and then I tried to explain to the very short, white-haired man helping me why those shouldn't be in quotes, but it didn't compute. I gave the baklava to the friends I'm staying with and got thumbs up. I'd definitely go back; it was spacious, much more so than you'd ever get in New York, and there were free samples of tabouli, honey halva spread and bread.

Then we hung out at Scoops in Culver City, which is run by a food blogger, where I ate this delicious caramel Oreo and chocolate almond non-dairy ice cream and tried to resolve my flight situation. It was very good, though the chocolate almond was a bit too almond-y for my taste, the caramel Oreo was perfect. Flavors change daily.

If you're in LA, follow @midtownlunchLA on Twitter for the latest and if you like music and food, see Zach's new Tumblr, Food is the New Rock.

My visit to LACMA

I went to LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) yesterday. Here are a few photos - the Rothko was for my friend Twanna, who loves can't stand Rothko. I liked the Barbara Kruger elevator in BCAM, the last section we visited, which was full of over-the-top modern art, like Jeff Koons' exhibit of 3 signed basketballs floating in water.

I'm watching the sun come up from the 30th floor of my beautiful hotel room, that has almost everything (except E!). Gotta get back into writing mode today, especially because I check out tomorrow. Excited to hear people are coming to tomorrow's reading, but want to make sure it gets the proper buzz, otherwise I'll feel a little silly for being out here, though I can't deny that a sunny day instead of the snow is rejuvenating, as has been the entire luxury of this trip. I'm still getting used to my new laptop, realizing little things, like the fact that the keys are faster to type with.

And yes, there is something a little not the point about taking photographs in a museum. For me it's a way to remember art that particularly piqued my interest.

not sure of titles, but the juxtaposition was jarring

There'd be no way to capture an entire elevator shaft on my camera, nor, do I think, we are meant to. I am a big Barbara Kruger fan, though of course, the question of whether art is another commodity like the ones she lists is, well, open to debate. It came on the heels of a very interesting discussion about art and law and fair use, whose intersection, though I dropped out of law school, fascinate me.

Bonus link and quote by Barbara Rose about performance artist Orlan, who I was impressed that my museum mate could remember about an hour after I first brought her up.

Rejected by Brevity: "Wannabe Housewife"

I still have a very love/hate relationship with posting personal, revealing things here, but if I'm ever going to be a writer (I guess I already am, but I mean, in a bigger, better way), I have to stop caring about the judgments. So I submitted this to the journal Brevity, a venue I'm determined to crack and learn how to write succinct essays. It got rejected, but since it's set in LA, on the trip before the last one, I thought I might share it here. I didn't go back and re-edit it for this blog, or even reread it. I am grateful for the rejection for forcing me to study and analyze the writing there and try to come up with something that will work. I have a few essays and stories lurking on the edges of my mind.

I will say I spent so much of last year lamenting missing people, lamenting the things I did wrong in so many relationships. I think there is a value in figuring out where I can be a better person, where I've hurt people, but I also think there's a way that can become an endless loop that just makes you feel awful. So I was trying to capture a moment I still remember so well - I wrote my tattoo essay in that hotel room - where I was really happy and hopeful. And I still am, I just am trying not to focus all that hopefulness outside of me and onto other people, and onto the parts of my life I can control and have a say in.

California is such a weird state for me; the Bay Area is like the ex capital for me (more on that later, but let's just say, I'm so glad I'm single), and weird things happen to me in Los Angeles. Hopefully not this time around!

Wannabe Housewife
by Rachel Kramer Bussel

I’m shopping at a Vons at a strip mall in Burbank, California. It’s the middle of the day, and we’re in the middle of a heat wave, the kind where simply crossing the street makes you forget everything you ever liked about the sun and think of it as an evil force you must escape from by any means necessary. In this case, that means a grocery store, plus, I need water. Everything about this is surreal; I live in Brooklyn, I have a 9-to-5 job. Most salient, though, is the fact that I don’t cook, yet suddenly, surrounded by endless aisles of foods I didn’t even know existed, along with some I did, I have this urge to cook⎯not for me, but for him, the boy who’s hotel room I’m borrowing for the day.

I say boy but really he’s a man, of course, but I like saying boy. His hands remind me of a boy’s, small and soft and sweet, unlike the rest of him. He can be sweet, but he can also be tough, prickly, hard to read. Even though he has one of the biggest penises I’ve ever seen, his hands are my favorite part of his body. I held one in mine as we fell asleep the night before in the giant hotel bed, the best kind.

As I stroll past the industrial size packages of beef jerky, I start to think about what he might want to eat, what might be helpful after a long day. I start to imagine myself rushing home to him with groceries, spending the day in an apron, in a kitchen. Not a specific kitchen, not his, or mine, but a fantasy one, in a big suburban house, not either of our Brooklyn kitchens.

Maybe because I’ve never spent a day, or even a night, whipping myself into a frenzy to cook anything, I find this image sexy. I like the idea of him off working and me home, alternating writing and cooking as seamlessly as one might cracking one egg, then moving on to the next⎯if one were good at cracking eggs.

Even though I’m going back home tonight, I say yes when asked if I want a Vons club card. You never know; maybe I’ll be back, right here, in this very same strip mall. Maybe I’ll even be staying with him.

I wind up buying the giant bag of beef jerky for myself, and a gallon of water for him. It’s hot out there, even though we’re in a luxury hotel. I don’t want him to get dehydrated.

We don’t have that kind of relationship, one where we worry about each other’s health, at least, not officially. I feel like such a girl, but, well, I am one, even at 34; maybe I’ll always be. I want to be the girl to his boy, no matter how many women’s studies classes I took deconstructing those notions. I want him to want me to feed him, comfort him, love him. That is what Vons makes me think about, when I’m not marveling over things like s’mores Goldfish crackers and Scrabble Junior™ Cheez-It®s, and wondering when the last time I actually shopped in a supermarket was.

Later that night, on my way to the airport, I ask the cab to drop me off. I was given five sandwiches for free, and, while delicious, even I can only eat so many spicy cold cuts. I’ve saved the spiciest one for him. This is my version of being a housewife; I rush out of the cab and tell the clerk his name and room number. I’ve scrawled my name on the label so he knows who it’s from, texting him to let him know I’m dropping something off. I leave as the clerk is picking up the phone to dial, slipping into the backseat, thankful we’re mere minutes from the airport.

I never hear back from him as to whether he got the sandwich, whether he liked it, and I’m too prideful to ask. “Maybe he never got it,” a friend suggests, and I picture the clerk, who’d seemed kind and professional, putting the phone down the moment I’d departed and helping himself to the soppressata.

I don’t ask in part because I don’t want to ruin the fantasy, to release myself from all I’ve invested in that sandwich. I still don’t know how to cook, despite an hour in the air-conditioned grocery store. Maybe it’s time I learn.

and just for fun, me and Oriana last year at the West Hollywood Book Fair:

Sex With a "Top Chef" essay at The Frisky

I wrote this essay for The Frisky, “Sex With a ‘Top Chef.’”

I’m not going to apologize for my actions, because it was a learning experience. A huge one. A game-changer. I came home and though it took me a little while of fumbling and missteps and separation anxiety, I weaned myself off of the people who didn't want me the way I wanted...well, if not them, the way I want a relationship. I was in a few flirtations, shall we say, but none were ones that would lead to what I'm looking for down the road. Not now, because I'm not in a place where I can be anyone's girlfriend, haven't been for a while. I'm in an in between, messy, working-on-myself place. I joked to myself I won't have sex til I'm a size six, but it's not a weight issue so much as a closure issue. I need closure with my body, with my apartment, with my book. I need closure on being this girl I called a "wannabe housewife" in an essay Brevity just rejected. I need closure on a lot of fronts and until then, I am really happy to focus on me. It sounds so selfish even to write that, but it's true. I miss certain things about being in a relationship, certainly, but I think because of that I kept compromising my principles, allowing myself to be the booty call or the second in line or whatever it was. I let myself fall so low that there was nowhere to go but up.

It's not an easy process, because while it's simple enough to say, "That's not what I want," it's harder when there are real feelings for the various people involved. If I could take the best parts of all of them and turn them into one person who magically thought I'd be a kickass girlfriend and baby mama, that would be awesome, but that is not real life. I'm finishing up the memoir The Pioneer Woman by Ree Drummond, which is basically about this totally larger than life romance, the kind that, well, sounds utterly fictional even though I know it's true. The second I decided to stop looking, stop obsessing, stop caring, really, about all the judgments, all the ways I don't measure up, something changed, in me and outside of me. Maybe "the second" is overstating it, but I'm in such a better place than I ever was in that downward spiral known as 2010, where I almost watched any slim chance I have of being a writer disappear, where I made the same mistake too many times to count when it comes to dating. I have a few things I'm proud of myself for in 2010, like getting my tattoo, but this year is the year, I think, I'm really gonna be someone I can look in the mirror and smile at. And that will be worth all the loneliness and wistfulness and nostalgia. That will be worth everything, and the more I focus on what it will take to make that happen, the more I know that everyone else's opinions are pretty much useless to me. That doesn't mean they don't exist, but I absorb them so easily into my skin. I start horrible comparisons to people I'll never hold a candle to. I do it so instantly, instinctively, that I have to fight that urge all the time. Now that my energy is focused on, well, me, I know that I could walk around LA in my sexiest dress, even amidst the catcalls of downtown, and just be happy in my own skin.

I learned not only not to judge someone by their online resume (and not to be in the dark about a Wild Flag show I was missing), but also that I am perfectly happy on my own. I don’t need to be flattered by random attention, whether I’m in New York or elsewhere. I learned it’s not selfish to stay in and enjoy the luxury of a big bed and cable TV. I learned that I would rather fall hard for the wrong people sometimes than be totally stoic. I learned that the right person, should they come along, will not be someone who insists on being right, who wants to tell me what I should be feeling. I learned so much from it and none of it has to do with his identity per se. I am looking forward to being back in LA, where maybe I’ll ice skate and eat grilled cheese and sleep in and write and have some quality time to myself. I don’t plan on going on any dates and I just feel so much better about myself than I did back then, when I was trying to convince myself I was worthy, of Mr. Top Chef, of my ex, of all sorts of people who aren’t me. So that’s my takeaway. You are perfectly entitled to your own. I'm glad I wrote it down, but I don't want to be the girl with stories any more. I don't want to be the drama queen. That's so 2010 and all of a sudden, armed with a plane ticket for 7:30 a.m., I feel ready to let every bit of that drama disappear.

West Coast book tour is this week: Berkeley, San Francisco, Los Angeles! All free, all with free cupcakes, and hot, hot stories.

I'll be doing a separate post about my 3 New York City events in February, but as a reminder, unless I'm already traveling or have a special occasion like a panel, this is my last year of doing a bazillion outside readings. I just can't pretend like I can afford them or that I'm rich, and it doesn't make financial sense to be running all over the country when I could be working smarter, better and trying to sell more books. So my point is: come see me in Berkeley, San Francisco and Los Angeles now! I'm hoping to get to a few other cities like Denver, Minneapolis and Milwaukee in 2011 as well, fingers crossed.

A reminder with Facebook links - I'd really love it if you'd spread the word. All these events are free, it's a chance to get the just-released Gotta Have It signed by me and contributors (Denise Hoffner, who wrote census taker erotica story "Concensus" in Gotta Have It, has been added to Thursday's Berkeley Good Vibrations reading) and I'm getting fabulous, unique cupcakes, different ones from different local bakers, for each event.

Saturday night I will also make my third appearance on The Dr. Susan Block Show - listen online! Saturday night, January 29th, 10:30 pm to midnight, PST, I'll be on with Shameless author Pamela Madsen - my interview with her will be up soon at SexIs Magazine.

"Your Face Here" at Pop tART Gallery in LA January 29-March 6

I'm so excited that I'll be in LA for this opening! I was supposed to go to a one-woman show called Sugar Daddy last time I was in town and we got calls that it was canceled due to illness, so I feel like I missed out on my LA artistic moment. Must email and hope I can get my portrait done! Last time, it was getting my ass photographed (maybe even for a book) by Dave Naz. This time I want to see art and hang with my friends and their kids. And eat grilled cheese and maybe get some sun and that's really, really it. Via Jillian Lauren.

YOUR FACE HERE

January 29th - March 5th, 2011

opening reception: January 29th, 7-10p

closing reception: March 5th

Pop tART Gallery

3023 W. 6th St.

Los Angeles, CA 90020

Los Angeles, CA - National news-making curator Lenora Claire and popular

drag performer Phyliss Navidad are proud to present both the launch of

their new gallery Pop tART, as well as a solo exhibition - part

portrait, part participatory, part performative - by Los Angeles based

artist, Austin Young.

YOUR FACE HERE is a solo exhibition by artist Austin Young that

challenges the normative conditions in which portraits are produced and

exhibited. Young, for over 25 years, has been a celebrated portrait

photographer and artist, whose works blurs the lines, and transcends the

distinctions, between fashion, portraiture, and gender. This exhibition

marks a rare and glamorous moment when Young will generously open his lens onto the public.

For the duration of the exhibition, Young will establish his art studio

for a 5 week residency at Pop tART Gallery. The artist will be present

during gallery hours for portrait sittings, which will eventually fill the

walls of the gallery. The public is invited to participate as the subject

of the exhibition through the purchase of the pop cultural real estate

of the gallery walls. Participation extends beyond simply sitting for a

portrait - it will be a collaborative process where the participants

determine the portrait’s size and placement. Following the legacy of

Warhol’s Factory, Young will transform each participant into an art

celebrity. Or, just impress your high school chums by having the man who

just broke attendance records at LACMA with his co-collaborator’s of

Fallen Fruit take your Facebook profile pic. Bring your face!

Opening reception will be on January 29th, from 7-10pm. Celebrity

make-up artists will be on site for beautification as well as a fabulous

performance by Killsonic, a 50 piece ensemble band. Floral arrangements

and landscaping on patio by Tenley Young, 1st place winner of “The

Arrangement” on LOGO. Makeup provided by Urban Decay. Accessories by

Skingraft. Refreshments by Customized Celebrations. The closing reception

will be your reception! Come see you face in lights.

Grilled cheese food porn from LA's Grilled Cheese Truck

I fell for The Grilled Cheese Truck this weekend, conveniently parked at the West Hollywood Book Fair yesterday. Below are the cheesy mac melt (mac & cheese on whole wheat!) and a custom-made brie with red onion on whole wheat. Delicious!

Signed copies of my books at Skylight Books plus Grilled Cheese Truck food porn

I walked (!!!!) to Skylight Books today and got a little tour and signed some of my books, so check out their erotica section. I also bought the memoir Cheesemonger: A Life on the Wedge by Gordon Edgar (Chelsea Green), which I'd never heard of but found in their food section. Just before I hit up the Grilled Cheese Truck for the first time. Looking forward to reading about punk rock cheesemaking. I did link to Amazon, because I get a little kickback, but I also love indie bookstores, hence this post. Click here to find Cheesemonger at your local indie bookstore via IndieBound.

Grilled Cheese Truck goodness (Ms. PacMan machine at Golden Gopher) and they also had sweet potato tater tots!!

In Los Angeles, live on the radio tonight, BDSM Night at Dr. Suzy

I'm going to be on the Dr. Susan Block show again tonight, this time live, 10:30-midnight Los Angles time! Click here to listen. Tomorrow I'll be at the West Hollywood Book Fair 1:15-2:15 on a sex writing panel. I will also be chasing down the Grilled Cheese Truck, and stopping by Skylight Books in Los Feliz and also high-end, beautiful sex toy store Coco de Mer to sign books! I used lots of stuff from Coco de Mer in my about-to-debut Orgasmic book trailer, and think I can safely say my books have never looked so gorgeous as they do in the display case at the one in New York.

I also have to adjust some of my clothing so my bra strap doesn't rub against my new tattoo on my back (I'm writing about it so will talk about it more next week.)
