Having Soccer World Cup Decided On Shootout Is Stupid And Here's Why

OK, so Japan beat the US in the World Cup:

Japan has won the Women's World Cup, stunning the United States 3-1 in a penalty shootout Sunday night after coming from behind twice in a 2-2 tie.

Here's the thing that irks me, and it has nothing to do with Japan winning. Sports like soccer, hockey and football are team sports. Meaning that many people are involved on both sides of the ball (or puck). There is a coordinated offense, and a coordinated defense. When you decide a game in a sport like that in a shootout, especially the championship game, it totally takes the team concept out of the picture. It devolves into a 1 on 1 situation. In hockey, you play overtime after overtime until someone scores. In football, you ply overtime after overtime until someone scores. But in soccer the World Cup was decided by this? That's just not right.

You've seen it. I've seen it.  All of that is the interwebs has seen it. Yes, I'm speaking of naked Japanese girls. But why? Why is a country full of people who love the idea of modesty producing over 10,000 adult videos a year filled with women so eager to get naked? In fact, with such contradiction, why do these women even choose to strip down at all? In the past, psychologist Takashi Tomita says that most women posed nude for money, but now it's all about the ego. And why not? If you're a young, hot, twenty-something, why not strut your stuff? Posing nude in photographs, adult videos, or even stripping has become a liberating experience for many women,, with one young woman remarking "I just happen to think my body is extraordinarily beautiful. I love it when men praise my nude body." Another woman explains "I wanted some beautiful nudes of myself while I'm still young.." I can't really argue with them. I say if it's empowering, go for it. However, I do question the line between "empowering self expression" and full-blown porn.   A nice self esteem boost isn't the only reason for posing nude though. One 40-year-old woman used it as a means for revenge against her cheating husband. Seems like a good plan to me, even if a little risqué. So what do you think? Is posing naked empowering for the women of Japan, or simply degrading because of how it's viewed? Does context matter? Is a tasteful nude photo better than being in an "adult video," or is it all the same?

According to Japan's Booming Sex Niche: Elder Porn in Time Magazine, Jun. 17, 2008 one of the most popular porn stars in Japan is Shigeo Tokuda, a 74-year-old actor. In his latest films, he plays a "tactful elderly gentleman who instructs women of different ages in the erotic arts," Time tells us. The shocker, though, is this:

Shigeo Tokuda is, in fact, his screen name. He prefers not to disclose his real name because, he insists, his wife and daughter have no idea that he has appeared in about 350 films over the past 14 years.

Now that is puzzing! How does Mr. Tokuda manage to keep his double life secret from his wife and daughter when his photo (above) appears on DVD covers and, since the Time article came out, all over the Internet?

Not that Japan is usually seen as a model of elder-sex acceptance. According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report from March 2008 cited in the article, "One in 4 married couples in Japan had not made love in the previous year, while 38% of couples in their 50s no longer have sex at all."

Yet porn videos are a billion-dollar industry in Japan, with "elder porn" one of its rising categories. One of Tokuda's film titles is "Forbidden Elderly Care" -- can you imagine our youth-obsessed American culture clamoring to view that? Apparently Japan is not so elder-phobic.

What about elder women in Japanese porn? Most films still feature women in their teens and 20s, hundreds of adult videos feature "mature women" up to their 70s.

Unfortunately, though, "a popular young actress can earn up to $100,000 per film, while a mature actress is paid only $2,000."
