Speaking at the Western Conservative Summit in Denver, Colo., GOP presidential hopeful Rick Santorum on Friday denounced New York’s legalization of gay marriage, and said there are simply some things that shouldn’t be left to states.

“States do not have the right to destroy the American family. It is your business,” Santorum said.

“It is not fine with me that New York has destroyed marriage. It is not fine with me that New York is setting a template that will cause great division in this country.”

The vehemently anti-gay Santorum said he supports a federal constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, and cited Abraham Lincoln’s famous quote — “We do not have the right to do wrong.”

At a campaign stop earlier in the week in Ankeny, Iowa, Santorum said he supports “great latitude for the states,” but there’s a limit — an apparently that limit is marriage equality.

“This idea that the 10th amendment means there is no boundary to what the states can do is a misunderstanding of the 10th amendment and I will stand on that ground.”

In an interview published Saturday in the Des Moines Register, Santorum said a federally uniform definition of marriage should be agreed on by Americans.

“You can’t have 50 different definitions of marriage,” he said.

“It’s wrong and we should fight it in every state and we should try to pass a federal law that makes sure that it is a uniform definition. [...] I think this is an issue that needs to be settled collectively by the American public, not by a few groups of elites who think it best to redesign the American culture.”

Also on Friday, in a reference back to his failed 2006 re-election campaign, the former Pennsylvania Senator denied ever comparing same-sex marriage to incest or polygamy, as accused by gay rights activist Tim Gill.

Gill was referring to this quote from an April 7, 2003 recorded interview with the Associated Press (transcript here), in which Santorum said:

“And if the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything.”

According to Santorum, however, that wasn’t a “comparison.”

Miley Cyrus Made To defend Gay Equal Rights Tattoo

Cyrus tweeted a photo of her equal-sign tattoo over the weekend, prompting debate among fans regarding gay rights.

 Miley Cyrus has never shied away from speaking her mind, and over the weekend she posted a photo of her latest body ink on Twitter: an equal-sign tattoo on her ring finger. In addition to sharing with the world her pro-gay rights stance via tat, she tweeted the message, "All LOVE is equal." However, the photo quickly prompted a debate on her Twitter account when fans began to respond to Miley's tattoo with mixed feelings.

 "Where does it say in the bible to judge others? Oh right. It doesn't," Miley tweeted to one fan who questioned her belief in God after displaying her support of the gay community. "GOD is the only judge honey. GOD is love."

But when her fans began attacking the fan who questioned her, Miley defended her for sharing her opinion with the world. "Dude everyone lay off ... Love u! Everyone is entitled 2 opinions! If u don't stand 4 something you'll fall for anything."
Her Twitter profile shares a similar message: "Let your light shine. Be a source of strength & courage. Share your wisdom. RADIATE LOVE."
This isn't the first time that Miley's sharing her beliefs on Twitter has sparked debate. In a Parade magazine interview in March 2010, Cyrus saidthat one of the reasons she had quit Twitter for a time was that she was getting angry tweets from fans who didn't agree with her support of gay marriage. She returned to Twitter earlier this year.
"There has been so much controversy sometimes about what I've said or done because I believe there are no mistakes, because God is the only one who can judge us," Cyrus explained. "That's the reason I deleted my Twitter account because I said on there that I believed in gay marriage because everyone should have the right to love each other, and I got such hate mail about my being a bad person."

The administration announces support to end ban gay blood donors

In an effort to promote LGBT equality and to address the shortage of blood donors in the U.S., Massachusetts Senator John Kerry has launched an initiative to overturn legislation which currently prevents gay men from giving blood.

Sen. Kerry is working closely with a colleague in the House of Representatives to prove that the ban, which was established in 1983 to prevent the spread of HIV, is not only discriminatory toward the gay community, but also simply no longer necessary.

According to the Boston Business Journal, Sen. Kerry has released a list of four steps that must be taken before the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) can certify that gay men can donate blood without compromising the nation’s blood supply. If the ban is to be lifted, HHS must first verify that gay men can donate blood without the risk of spreading transmissible diseases.

HSS must also identify the root cause of errors that result in the accidental release of blood not cleared for use and determine if alternative screening strategies are necessary to assure the safety of blood collection.

Sen. Kerry expressed his excitement that HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius “responded with concrete steps to finally remove this policy from the books.” Kerry stated, “HHS is doing their due diligence and we plan to stay focused on the end game – a safe blood supply and an end to this discriminatory ban.”

Although the establishment of such guidelines shows progress toward lifting the ban, it is unclear how much time the HHS will need to conduct the research necessary to fulfill these measures.

Update:

The Obama administration has announced support for Senator Kerry’s combined efforts with the HHS to end what the Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) Director of Public Policy Nathan Schaefer describes as an “antiquated” policy.

Schaefer explained that the GMHC looks forward to working with the HHS and the Obama administration to revise the policy to reflect current HIV detection methods.

Liza Friedllander filed a suit against a Queens Sizzler, accusing the manager of pushing her and calling her homophobic slurs.   

A major gay rights group says in a lawsuit against a Queens Sizzler steak house that a manager spewed homophobic epithets at a customer and shoved her to the ground.

Lambda Legal charges in the suit that the frightening encounter ensued after the manager accused Liza Friedlander of not paying for the buffet during brunch with friends at the Forest Hills Sizzler last September.

The suit, filed in Queens Supreme Court, says the manager shoved Friedlander in the chest and kicked her in the legs while calling her a "f...... dyke" and other epithets.

The suit contends the attack set off a frenzy of hateful chants from other patrons, spurring Friedlander's friends to frantically dial 911 out of fear she would be killed.

One male diner called Friedlander a "he-she freak" and demanded she leave.

Friedlander said it left her shaken.

"Just because I don't appear to be the Sizzler manager's idea of what a woman should look like doesn't mean that gives him permission to attack me and allow other customers to join in," Friedlander said.

"My friends and I went in for Saturday brunch, just like everyone else in the restaurant that morning, but it turned into a nightmare. No one should have to go through that."

The suit does not name the worker who allegedly shoved Friedlander, but Edgar Orellana, a manager at the restaurant on Metropolitan Ave. said he was the one involved in the confrontation. He vigorously denied the allegations in the Lambda Legal suit, insisting he neither touch nor verbally abused her.

"I'm Hispanic. I respect people of all ethnicities, races or sexuality," he told The Daily News in Spanish. "I'm here to work, not hurt anyone."

He described Friedlander as "violent from the start" and said she freaked out when the brunch period ended.

"We told her she could continue eating from the buffet. She tried to hit me with her plate. I jumped back," Orellana said. "A customer grabbed her so that she would not hit me. I didn't touch her. I went to my office and called 911. I did not come out again."

The suit is believed to be the first test of an anti-bias law passed last year that allows victims of anti-gay violence to sue their attackers in civil court.

It accuses Sizzler of violating Friedlander's civil rights by the alleged verbal and physical attacks.

"What was supposed to be a relaxing, enjoyable brunch at Sizzler turned into a horrifying ordeal of discrimination, violence and degradation,"  Natalie Chin, Friedlander's lawyer said Thursday.

The suit seeks unspecified damages.

Homophobe Hvy Metal Preacher files lawsuit against Rachel Maddow

Attorney Larry Klayman, the founder of Judicial Watch and Freedom Watch, has filed a lawsuit against Rachel Maddow and MSNBC on behalf of Bradlee Dean, head of the religious ministry You Can Run But You Cannot Hide International.

The lawsuit seeks in excess of $50 million in damages for false accusations and defamation. Dean claims that Maddow accused him on her MSNBC show of supporting the killing of homosexuals, which harmed the "fine reputation" of himself and his ministry.

"This case is filed as a matter of principle," Klayman said. "We need more Bradlee Deans in the world and hateful left wing television commentators must be made to respect not only his mission but the law."

On her show, Maddow played a clip of Dean saying Muslim nations that execute gays are more moral than American Christians.

"Muslims are calling for the executions of homosexuals in America," he said on AM 1280 the Patriot. "This just shows you they themselves are upholding the laws that are even in the Bible of the Judeo-Christian God, but they seem to be more moral than even the American Christians do, because these people are livid about enforcing their laws. They know homosexuality is an abomination."

Dean says that Maddow ignored a "very clear disclaimer" on his ministry's site that he does not support killing homosexuals.

But after playing the clip Maddow noted that Dean "later clarified that he didn't really mean to sanction murder of gay people, he said, quote, 'We have never and will never call for the execution of homosexuals."

She also played a clip of Dean saying on the radio that, "On average, they [homosexuals] molest 117 people before they’re found out."

Dean's ministry is based in Annandale, Minnesota and centered around the Christian heavy metal band Junkyard Prophet. He had hosted a show on AM 1280 The Patriot, but the station later fired him after he aired in a six-minute song mocking African Americans and then likened President Obama to Osama bin Laden.

U.S. to Take Another Look at Gay Blood

A policy that bars gay men from donating blood for life is “suboptimal,” advisers to the Health and Human Services Department said on Tuesday, and needs another look.

HHS asked a committee of experts on blood and tissue donations to reexamine the policy and see if there is a way to let at least some gays donate blood.

“If the data indicate that a change is possible while protecting the blood supply, we will consider a change to the policy,” HHS said in a statement.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, an HHS agency, has banned blood donation by any man who has had homosexual sex because of the risk of the AIDS virus. Soon after the AIDS pandemic began in the 1980s, people such as hemophiliacs who received frequent blood transfusions or blood products began to become infected with the deadly and incurable virus.

Men who have sex with other men, including gay and bisexual men, have an HIV infection rate 60 times higher than that of the general population, the FDA says.  They have an infection rate 800 times higher than first-time blood donors and 8,000 times higher than the rate of repeat blood donors. Tests cannot pick up a new HIV infection in the blood with 100 percent accuracy; because blood is often pooled, many people may be at risk from a single infected donor.

But the Red Cross, always struggling with blood shortages, and other groups such as gay-rights organizations oppose the blanket policy. They say that there are other ways to screen out donors at high risk of HIV infection. Sen. John Kerry, D–Mass., has also been pushing for a change in policy.

“We’ve been working on this a long time in a serious way, and I’m glad Secretary [Kathleen] Sebelius responded with concrete steps to finally remove this policy from the books,” Kerry said in a statement. “HHS is doing their due diligence, and we plan to stay focused on the endgame – a safe blood supply and an end to this discriminatory ban.”

“This announcement by HHS means we’re moving in the direction of finally ending this antiquated and discriminatory policy,” agreed Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Ill.  “Senator Kerry and I will continue to push for a behavior-based screening process both in the name of fairness and a safer blood supply.”

Some of the questions the Blood, Organ, and Tissue Safety Working Group will ask: What motivates a man who has had sex with other men to donate blood? Can men understand what puts them at high risk of HIV infection? Will donors answer honestly?

“It is anticipated that the described studies will yield data for reevaluation of the current deferral policy and potentially establish safety of blood collection from a subset of men who have sex with men or other currently deferred donors (e.g. men with a history of abstinence from MSM behavior for a defined time period),” HHS said.

Other people with potential but unknown exposures to infectious diseases are banned from giving blood in the United States, such as people who lived in Britain in the 1980s, when bovine spongiform encephalopathy, also known mad-cow disease, was sweeping dairy herds.

Lesbian couple not allowed into Dolly Parton's Dollywood 'cause Gay shirt

A lesbian couple was refused entry to the Dollywood theme park because one of the women was wearing a T-shirt that read, "marriage is so gay."

Olivier Odom and Jennifer Tipton said what really rankled them was the explanation from the gatekeeper.

"He said it was a family park," said Tipton. "Families come in a wide range of definitions these days and we were with our family."

Odom was eventually allowed inside after she agreed to turn the shirt inside out.

"I didn't want to make a scene in front of the girls," she said, referring to her friends' young daughters. "I wanted them to have a fun time, so I went ahead and did it and figured that I could handle it more tactfully outside of the park setting."

But both women are still steaming mad and have filed a formal complaint with the Tennessee park.

"Our whole deal is about marriage equality and being treated equally," said Odom, who lives with Tipton in Knoxville. "It's not that we're trying to cause a big stir."

Dollywood spokesman Pete Owens said their policy is to ask patrons with clothing or tattoos that could be considered offensive to change clothes or cover up.

"Dollywood is open every day to everybody," Owens told the Knoxville News Sentinel. "We've been very inclusive of everyone and I'm proud of that record that we've had through the years."

Owens added that he intends to reach out to the couple. He said their complaint about how they were treated on July 9 has caused them to revisit - and possibly revamp - their dress code policy.

That would probably be a good career move.

Country music icon Dolly Parton, who owns the popular park in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., supports gay marriage. And unlike many other country stars, she has said so publicly.

"I always say, 'Sure, why can't they get married? They should suffer like the rest of us do,'" Parton quipped when asked two years ago about the still-contentious issue.
