The problem with letting politicians run a budget on promises is that they have no clue that those promises come due and real money must be paid up. What results is a Ponzi scheme like social security where money is taken from new investors and given to old investors. Bernie Madoff went to jail for it, yet our political ruling class does it on a much larger scale and not only are they not incarcerated, but they get elected to keep the Ponzi scheme going. Eventually, all Ponzi schemes fail because a tipping point is reached where money getting paid out on the back end exceeds that coming in through the front, and then there is shock that it was all a house of cards with no cash in the couch cushion:

Any promise by a politician that doesn't have to be paid for in the here and now is a Ponzi scheme, including free healthcare in retirement, pensions, social security and Medicare just tio name a few.

After the Giffords shooting in Arizona in January, liberal politicians and their minions in the press went on a coordinated campaign to shut up conservatives by claiming violent rhetoric was responsible for the tragedy. Witness their call for the 'new civility' from The Politico via memeorandum:

The Newark Star-Ledger has some explosive quotes from one of the two Democratic legislative leaders who recently reached a compromise on a pension reform bill with Gov. Chris Christie regarding the overall state budget:
Senate President Stephen Sweeney went to bed furious Thursday night after reviewing the governor’s line-item veto of the state budget.
He woke up Friday morning even angrier.
“This is all about him being a bully and a punk,” he said in an interview Friday.
“I wanted to punch him in his head.”
...“You know who he reminds me of?” Sweeney says. “Mr. Potter from ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ the mean old bastard who screws everybody.”

Governor Chris Christie has again vetoed state taxpayer funding for the Planned Parenthood abortion business. Christie has delighted pro-life advocates again by deleting the millions in funding from the state budget.

The New Jersey Senate passed a measure to restore the $7.5 million in funding 26-13 with all of the Senate Democrats voting to restore the Planned Parenthood funds along with Republicans Diane Allen and Jennifer Beck. Pro-life advocates called on him to rescind the funding again, after two of the abortion business’ centers closed last year following the first veto of the funding.

...there are three main reasons, other than the fact that it is the biggest abortion business, to de-fund Planned Parenthood in the Garden State. First, Planned Parenthood was found to have engaged in improper billing practices.

“Last August, the Star Ledger reported that the U.S. Inspector General’s Audits from 2001-2005 specifically cited Planned Parenthood providers for improperly billing Medicaid $597,000 for family planning services which the state had to repay,” Tasy explained.

This one is just a tad more egregious however:

Planned Parenthood was also found to have aided and abetted the sex trafficking of minors and it failed to comply with health and safety regulations.

“In February, an employee at the Perth Amboy Planned Parenthood family planning clinic was caught on tape aiding and abetting in the sex trafficking of minor girls as young as 13 years old,” she said. “In March, the Planned Parenthood family planning and abortion facility in Mercer County was inspected by the NJ Department of Health and issued a 39 page deficiency report for non-compliance with health and safety regulations, including the failure to properly sterilize a reusable vaginal ultrasound.”

...In early February, an employee at the Planned Parenthood abortion facility in Perth Amboy, New Jersey was caught on videotape working with an alleged sex trafficking ring operator to get abortions done on the underage girls he claimed he was exploiting.
