While Business Insider wondered whether the debut of “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” might suffer from sharing a debut date with the latest “Harry Potter,” we’d imagine she wasn’t trying to take down Hogwarts. After all, the movie is in limited release.
But if the negative stigma from News Corp won’t do in, and a boy wizard won’t take it down, we can all rest assured that the reviews will. Because, so far, they’re not flattering.
In fact a rundown of top critics on Rotten Tomatoes reads like an angry bathroom stall missive inside the IFC Center.
“For 10 or 15 minutes it could be mistaken for a good movie,” gripes the SF Gate. Meanwhile, theNew York Times is crueler:
For those who may have wondered if foot binding, wife beating and a crooning Hugh Jackman could fit into one movie, here’s the short answer: no.
Hugh Jackman? Where’d that guy come from?
And New York Post gives it a middling two-star rating, but fails to provide any concrete explanation for its ranking (hmmm, wonder why?), other than to gripe over Hugh Jackman’s omission from the film credits.
